a really good read.

Block quote for the following: Before we had this training, we had no idea how important is to release yourself from your nerves by doing some simple "exercises" and with that get to the important part of the job which is be able to transmit to the audience a good speech without looking like a robot or a machine

Made to stick
Chip and Dan Heath

One of my all time favourites that I quote in pretty much every workshop I run as this is one of the best guides to effective communication, be it on stage or one to one. An excellent study breaking down what actually makes ideas stick in our mind. Full of case studies and stories, great insights and really practical applicable advice.

Breath
James Nestor

A great look at how important how we breathe is and how modern habits have led to poor health. Nestor talks about his own struggles with breathing and the impact his research and practicing simple changes in breathing techniques has made on his health. It’s a fascinating read that challenges the way we think about something as fundamental as breathing.

Pitch Perfect
Bill McGowan

This is a very practical guide to mastering the art of communication, offering strategies for delivering clear, compelling messages in both personal and professional settings. McGowan draws on his experience as a media coach to provide tips on everything from body language to storytelling, however the style is more American so not everything would work in every market necessarily. Nevertheless the book is concise, engaging, and packed with actionable advice.

Zen and the Brain
James H. Austin, M.D.

If you are looking to really sink your teeth into look no further than Zen and the Brain. Though sometimes a challenging read, it is a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of the intersection between neuroscience and Zen Buddhism. It delves deeply into how meditative practices influence the brain, blending scientific research with personal insights to offer a detailed look at consciousness, mindfulness, and spirituality. The book provides a fascinating bridge between Eastern philosophy and Western science, making it a rewarding read for those interested in both.

Influence
Robert R. Cialdini, Ph.D.

This is one of the ground breaking books that explores the psychological principles of persuasion. It uses multiple case studies and stories to bring to life the six principles of persuasion and how to practically apply them. What it is great about this book is it's focus on ethical application of these principles. The book is both informative and accessible, making it a must-read for anyone interested in understanding human behaviour and the mechanics of persuasion.

The Healing Power of the Breath
Richard P. Brown, M.D. and Patricia L. Gerbarg, M.D.

This is the first book I ever read about how important breath is to your physical and mental health and the power it has. The book is written by two doctors so it draws on scientific research and their clinical expertise and presents simple, effective exercises that can reduce stress, enhance energy, and improve overall health. It's a valuable resource for anyone looking to harness the power of breath for healing and resilience.

Gamestorming
Dave Gray, Sunni Brown and James Macanufo

I have a personal pet hate of sitting through badly planned or facilitated workshops. Workshops are such a great opportunity to find new ideas, solve problems and bring teams together and when that is wasted it really drives me crazy! This book is a great solution to that problem. The book offers a wide range of interactive exercises and tools that help unlock innovative thinking and improve communication. It's an excellent resource for leaders and facilitators looking to energize meetings and encourage out-of-the-box solutions.

Creative Confidence
Tom Kelley and David Kelley

I think I read creative confidence in a matter of days, I was so inspired by this book plus happened to be on holiday without my kids which so had the time to swallow this one! What I love the most is the main message of this book that anyone can unlock their creative potential. Drawing on their experiences at IDEO and the Stanford d.school, the authors offer practical insights and real-world examples to help readers build creative confidence in their personal and professional lives. The book is both motivational and actionable, making it a must-read for anyone looking to tap into their inner innovator.

Difficult Conversations
Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen

This is a very practical guide to navigating challenging discussions with clarity and empathy. The book breaks down the underlying structure of tough conversations, offering tools to manage emotions, understand different perspectives, and communicate more effectively. It's an insightful and accessible resource for improving both personal and professional relationships.
